WA SUNG 3RD ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNEY

by Clayton Yukumoto

On August 12, 2009, Wa Sung had its 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex in Alameda. For most of us "weekend warriors", our day began at the driving range or at the putting green, honing our skills on what we all thought would be the day the golf gods would shine on us and perhaps we would score a few birdies or better????? To ensure a good round, a few of us bought a few mulligans and the pink putting string! (a sure way to make a putt without actually putting!-- a novel idea indeed) Many of us golfers armed with these "handicaps" were ready to attack the Earl Fry Course and planned to have the game of our lives!

At 11 AM Harry Greer, Valerie Greer, Guy Dilling and Bob Jones began at the #1 hole amid cheers and well wishes -- the 3rd Annual Tournament began!

Last year our Golf Tournament contributed more than $2000 to our Annual Merit Scholarship Fund and we were hoping to continue the growth of our tournament. Well, we were not disappointed as we had a total of 10 teams with 37 golfers playing! Mother Nature did not disappoint us either as we had a fabulous day to play our round of golf!

Sunny in all parts of the course with very little wind (there went another excuse for many of us!) The course was in great shape also, the greens were fast and fairways beautiful. Many of us found the rough very "ROUGH and DEEP".

In the early-morning putting contest, Daniel Soohoo and Lou Herman both sank a 25-putt and were declared co-winners! They shared half of the pot. We had our contest for the longest drive which was on the #2 hole some 480 yards straight down the course and our winner was Anthony How! Congrats! As for the par-3 contests, Raymond Lew won the "closest to the pin" contest on #4. We then had a switch to keep us golfers from not partying too hard and Rich Olander won #15 for being the farthest from the pin but still on the green, some 54 feet and 6 inches away! Rumor has it that he made the putt too. Congrats to both Raymond and Rich!

The winning team: Bob Jones, Harry Greer, Valerie Greer, Guy Dilling

Drum Roll please! The winning team for the 3rd Annual Scholarship Tournament was Harry Greer, Valerie Greer, Guy Dilling and Bob Jones! Congrats! Actually, to say they "won" was the understatement of the year as they mercilessly annihilated the field. Their net score was an incredible 47 (not a typo)!

Dinner was held at club member Raymond Tang's Aroma Restaurant and Bar in Alameda. From the fresh salad right through the roast and chicken pasta, the dinner and the service were outstanding! Oh yes and the dessert was fabulous! Many in attendance had more than one...and will remain anonymous!

The Co-Chairs want to thank all the golfers who participated in this year's golf event, which raised over $2700. Your contribution of both time and money for our Merit Scholarship Program is greatly appreciated and will be used to fund the 2010 Merit Scholarship! To Raymond Tang and his organization, many thanks for the outstanding dinner! To volunteers Cynthia Lim, AiRung Liu and Cimberly Eng-Tamura, thanks for taking care of the registration, the putting contest and the dinner door prizes! And to my fellow co-chairs, Arnold Mew, Harry Greer and Roland Hui, many thanks for the hours of dedication and sacrifices to the event! Please make sure you keep the month of August open again for the 4th Annual Scholarship Tournament!

See everyone next year!
